So the story goes: Njal proposed to Elin at a Band of Horses show in Oslo earlier this year. When the Bride and Groom heard that Band of Horses was to play at a festival in Tromsø on the same day of their wedding, they contacted the band and told them their story. With all the coincidences surrounding the wedding, the band decided to surprise the couple. Having not heard from the band at all and accepted that the opportunity passed, Band of Horses showed up minutes after landing in Tromsø to play Marry Song at the ceremony.

Now isn’t that something to tell your grandchildren?

I saw Band of Horses at Roskilde Festival a couple of years ago, and their performance left me with the impression that these guys genuinely enjoy making other people happy with their music. And just when you thought they couldn’t get any cooler, they pull this stunt.

I think I could probably attend a concert with Lorenzo Woodrose every weekend for a very long time. He’s a brilliant musician, knows how to jam out and is the man behind some of the most amazing lyrics of newer Danish rock history. Read a small review of last night’s concert over at nitusind.nu (in Danish, sorry).

On Friday, I went North to Frederikshavn and shot some photos at the Atrap music festival. The line-up was pretty amazing and you could/should wonder what great names like Bjørn Svin and Albertslund Terrorkorps were doing in the deserted parts of North Jutland on a Friday night in April. Nevertheless, it was an insane night – Bjørn Svin amazed everybody with some hardcore techno, Fagget Fairys mashed-up a lot of popular music and fed their horse, while ATK finished off by slapping everybody in the face with their trashcore electro. In total, indeed worth the trip to Frederikshavn!

It’s all about the Danish electronic music

I’ve wanted to write this post for about a week and finally I have the time to sit down and do it! Two days ago, on Saturday 21st of February, the Århus-based LJUD released a very important piece of Danish music history, Pioneers – The Beginning of Danish Electronic Music (link in Danish). The release is a compilation of some of the earliest electronic recordings and contains music by electronic legends Else Marie Pade, Jørgen Plaetner, Bent Lorentzen, Gunner Møller Pedersen, Fuzzy, Svend Nielsen and Svend Christiansen.

For many years, I have been interested in exploring more of the early stuff like Plaetner and Else Marie Pade, but haven’t been able to do so in a very structured manner. Now I have some of the best stuff digitalised by the LJUD guys and compiled on the two-cd release.

Furthermore, the enclosed booklet contains a great read-through of early Danish electronic music and interviews with all the involved artists, except from Jørgen Plaetner, who passed away in 2002. Here’s a link to a page dedicated to Plaetner’s music (still in Danish, hopefully you’ll be able to navigate). He was indeed a true legend!

If you would like to read an extensive work on electronic music, while listening to the Danish pioneers and flicking through a nice booklet perhaps, you should have a look an the Danish book Filtreringer by Henrik Marstal and Henriette Moos. While in Danish, it does not only cover Danish electronic music, but also a wide variety of electronic genres and is indeed a thorough historical piece of work.

To stick to the modern-day context, I would also like to write a few lines about Glöggerne, who have managed to impress me at least a couple of times last year both at Platform4 and the Student House.

Well, I better stop for now; I believe to have shared my recommendations of electronic music and the like for some time. Now, the single most important thing for you to do, is to make sure to track down your copy of Pioneers – The Beginning of Danish Electronic Music at your local record dealer! Thanks to all hard-working people at LJUD making this record a reality and working hard to ensure that the public is given the opportunity to get hold of some of Danish musical history’s most important work!

Air Guitar Heroes

Last Thursday, Transformator hosted and nitusind.nu arranged the local annual air guitar championship! In a packed room – and with people turned down at the entrance – the atmosphere was great and it was indeed quite an experience! Kloster welcomed in the Labelkollektiv Distribution family

One of my favourite Danish artists Kloster is now officially a part of the Labelkollektiv Distribution with his release of “Do Not Be Afraid” on vinyl. It’s even possible to get hold of another Kloster record over at Washington Inc. Records, plus there is a release party for ‘Do Not Be Afraid’ in Copenhagen coming up!

Acid Mothers Temple review and pictures

Last night I lost my hearing/herring as I went to Studenterhuset to experience a trip down Psychedelia Lane together with Acid Mothers Temple. I expected it to be loud and I sure wasn’t dissapointed! I wrote a small review of the concert over at nitusind.nu in Danish and I took some pictures as well. Almost everybody can see the pictures, so if you can’t, you wouldn’t be able to read this post.
